The 5-Point Digital Checklist: Do this before you burn money on Ads

Something I’ve noticed in some of my recent discovery calls are the amount of business owners running ads before setting up their digital foundation.
Ads are an extremely valuable and tangible tool to accelerate growth, so I get it.
Some may argue that perfecting marginal details over prospecting is unnecessary, but without the proper groundwork, it’s more likely you’re sending your prospects to a dead end.
Before you spend another dollar on Google Ads, Facebook campaigns, or promoted posts, run through this checklist of simple, non-negotiables.
1. Your Google Business Profile Is Complete and Active
If someone searches for your service in your area right now, does your business appear? Test it.
If not, that’s step number one – and if it does, are your services explained outright? Is your contact information accessible? Are you using proper links to your website and social media?
This immediately becomes your first priority.
Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is one of the most powerful free tools available to service businesses. It directly affects whether you show up in local map results, how your business appears in search, and whether potential customers can quickly confirm you're legitimate.
Complete means:
Accurate business name, address, phone number, hours of operation, website link, services listed, photos uploaded, and active review responses.
Incomplete profiles lose business to competitors who simply filled theirs out.
2. Your Website Loads Fast and Works on Mobile
Most people searching for local services are doing it on their phone. If your website takes more than three seconds to load or is hard to navigate on a small screen, people leave, and don't come back.
Use Google's free PageSpeed Insights tool to check your site speed. If your score is under 70 on mobile, that's a problem worth fixing before you drive any paid traffic to it.
A functional, mobile-ready website doesn't have to be elaborate. It only needs to clearly communicate what you do, who you serve, and how to contact you.
3. Your SEO Basics Are Covered
Getting found on Google without paying for it starts with a few fundamentals. Each page of your website should have a clear title, a short meta description, and content that reflects the actual terms people search for when they need your service.
Avoid jargon, and think about how you and your services are viewed by your customers.
Example: "Plumber in [city]" performs better than "residential plumbing solutions." Use those phrases naturally throughout your websites’ content, headings, and page titles.
Much of this guidance can be found in your domain’s host settings, with simple suggestions that can get you started.
It’s really not about stuffing keywords, rather ensuring Google can clearly understand what you do.
4. You Have a Way to Capture and Nurture Leads
Not every visitor is ready to book or buy the first time they land on your site!
If you have no way to stay in touch with them, you’re essentially starting your prospecting from scratch almost daily.
A simple email CTA, even one that just offers a helpful tip, a free estimate, or a monthly update, gives you some option to secure leads.
Email marketing returns an average of $36 for every $1 spent, making it one of the most cost-effective channels available to small businesses. Building that list now means you're not starting from zero every time you want to hit your funnel.
5. You Have at Least a Few Real Reviews
As you well know, social proof isn't optional anymore.
Before someone calls you, books an appointment, or requests a quote, they're checking reviews or activity across channels. A business with five genuine, detailed Google reviews will outperform a competitor with a polished website and zero reviews almost every time.
Ask your best customers for reviews; either directly, personally, and right after a job well done.
As awkward as it is to ask, most people are happy to leave a review if they’ve genuinely found your service valuable.
Run the Checklist First
Each of these five points costs very little to address, in fact, most are free.
Together, they create the infrastructure that determines whether any marketing actually has a chance at conversion.
Get these right, then consider advertising. You'll spend less and see more.
